In a renewed effort to promote preventive healthcare and improve public understanding of diabetes, Lagos Passionate Lions Club conducted a diabetes awareness campaign, health talk and blood sugar screening for traders at Isheri-Oke Ayetoro Market, Magodo Phase 1, Lagos State, on Thursday, October 22, 2026.

The initiative brought health education and screening services closer to market traders, emphasizing the importance of early detection, healthy living and regular medical check-ups in preventing complications associated with diabetes.

Speaking during the exercise, the Club President, Lion Emeka Enwemasor, explained that the campaign was designed to educate members of the community about the dangers of diabetes and encourage them to take their health more seriously.

He noted that diabetes was a potentially life-threatening condition that affected people across different age groups and could lead to severe complications when left undetected or poorly managed.

According to him, the club’s visit was particularly significant because it had previously engaged traders at the same market and donated a blood glucose monitoring device to support their health checks.

He expressed concern that some community members had yet to make regular health monitoring a priority, stressing that awareness must be accompanied by deliberate action.

Lion Enwemasor encouraged individuals to undergo regular medical examinations and monitor their blood sugar levels, noting that early detection and appropriate medical care could help prevent complications and improve quality of life.

Also speaking at the event, the activity chairperson for the month, Lion Pastor Okiemute Jane Adenowo, highlighted the importance of lifestyle choices in reducing the risk of diabetes and supporting effective disease management.

She explained that unhealthy dietary habits, physical inactivity and excessive consumption of sugary foods and drinks could increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. She urged residents to embrace healthier routines including eating balanced meals, maintaining a healthy weight and engaging in regular physical activity.

Lion Adenowo added that public education remained an important component of Lions International’s service priorities as it empowered individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

She further advised participants to limit their intake of highly processed foods and sugary beverages while making regular blood sugar checks part of their healthcare routine.

Providing additional health guidance, Nurse Anu Ademesan emphasized the need for routine screening for blood sugar and blood pressure alongside regular consultations with qualified healthcare professionals.

She explained that certain diabetes risk factors including age and family history could not be changed, making preventive monitoring particularly important for individuals who were more susceptible to the condition.

Nurse Ademesan also encouraged participants to maintain a healthy weight, eat nutritious meals, remain physically active and follow appropriate medical advice. She stressed that individuals already living with diabetes needed consistent monitoring and proper management to reduce the risk of serious complications.

The outreach combined education with screening, giving traders an opportunity to learn more about diabetes while taking practical steps towards understanding their health status.

In her response, the Head of the Market, Mrs Janet Odun, expressed appreciation to the Lagos Passionate Lions Club for its continued commitment to community service and the well-being of market traders.

She commended the club for bringing essential health information and screening services directly to the community, particularly to people who might otherwise have limited opportunities to participate in such initiatives. She also expressed hope that the club would sustain its engagement with the market in the future.

The exercise reflected the Lions’ commitment to humanitarian service and preventive healthcare, demonstrating how community-based interventions could help raise awareness, encourage early detection and promote healthier lifestyles.

Through this service activity, Lagos Passionate Lions Club reaffirmed its dedication to serving communities, empowering individuals with health knowledge and making a meaningful difference in the lives of those in need.
