Lagos Elites Lions Club strengthened its commitment to youth development and talent discovery through its August service activity, tagged “Youth Empowerment 2.0,” held at Dairy Farm Secondary School, Agege, Lagos.
The initiative, which was organized in partnership with young talents from the Zion FC Youth Team, was designed to provide an avenue for young people to develop their talents, improve their physical well-being and gain access to mentorship and support needed to pursue their aspirations.
Football served as the central platform for the programme, which brought together young athletes, coaches, Lions and volunteers for a day of sports, health awareness, encouragement and empowerment.
The programme featured a fitness walk and medical fitness assessments, giving the young participants an opportunity to engage in physical activity while also paying attention to their health and overall fitness. The health component underscored the importance of maintaining good physical condition as part of the development of young athletes.
A football tournament was also organised as part of the activity, providing the participants with an opportunity to demonstrate their skills, teamwork, discipline and competitive spirit. The tournament attracted enthusiastic participation from the young talents and provided a platform for the club to identify and recognize promising players.
Beyond the football activities, the programme included inspirational and motivational sessions, during which the young participants were encouraged to remain focused on their goals, develop positive character and make responsible choices as they navigated their formative years.
Lagos Elites Lions Club also donated football equipment and training bibs to support the young players and enhance their training activities. The intervention was aimed at providing some of the basic resources needed by the youngsters to continue developing their sporting abilities.
As part of the club’s support for the team, financial assistance was provided to the coaching team, recognizing the important role coaches played in nurturing and guiding young talents. Outstanding young players were also recognized for their performances and contributions during the programme.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the club emphasized that talent alone was not enough to guarantee success for young people. According to the president Lion Charles Mofunanya NLCF, young talents also need access to opportunities, mentorship, encouragement and the necessary support to transform their potential into meaningful achievements.
The Youth Empowerment 2.0 initiative therefore went beyond a football tournament. It represented an investment in young people and demonstrated how sports could be used as a vehicle for personal development, discipline, teamwork and social engagement.
The club maintained that there were talented young people across society with the ability to excel in sports and other fields, but many required the right environment and support to realize their potential.
“The talents are here. The potential is here. Let’s give them the support they need,” one of the club official said, reaffirming its commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for young people.
The initiative also reflected the broader service philosophy of Lions Clubs, which promotes community development and humanitarian intervention through practical programmes that respond to identified needs. It also fulfils one of the global service focus on youth empowerment.
A club member in the closing remark expressed appreciation to God Almighty, the club’s President, Lion Engr. Charles Mofunanya, members of the Board of Directors, club members and volunteers who contributed to the success of the service activity. She reiterated that their collective efforts had helped make the programme possible and expressed hope that the intervention would continue to inspire and positively impact the young participants.
With Youth Empowerment 2.0, Lagos Elites Lions Club reaffirmed its commitment to supporting young people and creating platforms through which emerging talents could receive the encouragement, resources and opportunities required to thrive.
