In furtherance of their commitment to community service and public health, Ikeja Dynamics Lions Club, in collaboration with Lagos Hilton Lions Club, organized a Clean Market Campaign and Free Hepatitis B Screening at the Day and Sunday Market, Ogba, Lagos, on Thursday, July 23, 2026.
The outreach, which combined environmental sanitation with preventive healthcare, was designed to promote proper waste management practices among market traders while increasing awareness about Hepatitis B and the importance of early detection.
During the environmental sensitization session, traders and shoppers were educated on responsible waste disposal, the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, and the need to reduce plastic waste in order to maintain a cleaner and healthier market environment.
To reinforce the campaign, the two clubs donated two plastic collection bins strategically positioned within the market to encourage proper waste disposal. In addition, the clubs presented 30 packs of reusable nylon bin bags, containing a total of 600 individual bags, to facilitate effective waste collection and improve sanitation across the market.
As part of efforts to ensure the sustainability of the project, five Green Market Ambassadors were selected from the market community and presented with branded aprons. The ambassadors were tasked with promoting good environmental practices and encouraging traders to make effective use of the donated waste collection facilities.
The healthcare component of the outreach focused on Hepatitis B awareness and prevention. Healthcare professionals educated market women on the causes, modes of transmission, prevention, and the importance of regular screening for the disease.
Following the awareness session, free Hepatitis B screening was conducted for 70 market women. Four participants tested positive and were immediately counselled by healthcare professionals before being referred to a General Hospital for further medical evaluation and appropriate treatment.
The three-hour outreach attracted the participation of 16 volunteers, including Lions members, intending Lions, guests, and healthcare professionals, reflecting the collaborative spirit that continues to drive Lions’ humanitarian service.
Speaking on the significance of the project, the organizers noted that the initiative not only improved public awareness of Hepatitis B but also established a sustainable framework for cleaner market surroundings through the provision of waste management facilities and the appointment of Green Market Ambassadors.
The successful collaboration between Ikeja Dynamics Lions Club and Lagos Hilton Lions Club further demonstrated the impact of partnership in addressing community health and environmental challenges. The clubs reaffirmed their commitment to implementing meaningful service projects that improve lives and create healthier communities.
